Big Data Leads to Big Improvements in Mill Maintenance

How do you leverage big data & AI in a mature industry like pulp & paper? Find answers at IBBC 2023.

Atlanta (August 17, 2023) - While the use of AI is gaining in popularity, it can only be as good as the data sources themselves. For mill asset reliability, the data is oftentimes sparse and incorrect. Many mills also lack the manpower to manage the data.

Modern data analysis software can largely automate the mill data collection and analysis process when properly fueled by reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) programs. RCM can not only predict critical equipment failures but also provide mills with the tools they need to prevent failures from occurring in the first place.

Jay Shellog of Strategy Maintenance Reliability will share how big data analytics coupled with RCM can help increase mill production during TAPPI’s 2023 International Bioenergy & Bioproducts Conference (IBBC). His presentation, Using Big Data to Improve Mill Maintenance is a Growing Opportunity, is part of IBBC’s Big Data Analysis and Reliability session.

Additional session presentations include:

IBBC 2023

IBBC’s peer-reviewed technical program focused on key areas associated with biomass. Developed by industry professionals, the sessions are expert-led and include high-level discussions on industry trends, new technologies and advancements. The technical program includes the following sessions:

The Conference also offers multiple networking events, a New Technology Showcase, and an exhibit floor where attendees can speak with suppliers about the latest technologies and solutions. In addition, attendees are invited to participate in the 39th Annual PaperChase Fun Run/Walk on Tuesday, November 7. This popular event features a 5k run/1.2 mile walk with prizes being awarded to the top men and women finishers in the 5k run. Proceeds from the event benefit the TAPPI Engineering Scholarship Fund.

IBBC 2023 is co-located with TAPPI’s Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling and Sustainability (PEERS) Conference. Attendees can attend both technical programs for only one registration fee. Mills receive special discount pricing.
